Origins

After completing my last EP, The Jaymar Sessions, and the single Reverie, I was not sure what direction I was going to take for the next project. Then I received an email.

Native Instruments had released a new update to their Komplete software line. To promote Komplete 11, the company ran a promo called Sketches.

NI challenged 24 contemporary produces to create a quick sketch using only instruments and effects from Komplete 11.

The concept struck a chord in me. I had invested money in the software a few years earlier, but had not taken the time to really learn how to use it. This seemed like a good time to start. Therefore, I set out to create my own "sketches" using the Komplete software.

However, the concept for The Celestial Sessions would not take shape until I learned that a new Blade Runner movie was being released. News of this new movie encouraged me to revisit the original Blade Runner movie. In doing so, I was reintroduced to the magnificence of the soundtrack composed by Vangelis. And from this was born the concept for The Celestial Sessions: a soundtrack to a fictional, sci-fi movie.

At first, I set a challenge to myself to create an EP worth of "sketches" over a weekend. And as I began work on this project, it became clear that I needed to do more than just create ambient, minimal tracks. And what was to be a weekend project turned out to be months of writing, recording, rewriting, editing, and more writing.

This has easily been my greatest endeavour to date. And in doing these types of projects I only continue to learn and develop, not only as a musician, but as a producer and engineer. It is said mixing is an amalgam of art and science. I am sure there is no shortage of opinions on the matter. What I do know is doing the work of musician, producer, mixing and mastering engineer is hard work. And I hope all this hard work shows in the music I create.
